There are 114 separate things you can buy for a wedding. The average American couple buys 49 of them. This is the list, ranked by how many couples actually buy each one.

Updated September 1, 20265 min read

Key takeaways

  • Rank by adoption, not by advice. The only ordering here is what percentage of couples actually bought each item in 2025.
  • The list breaks cleanly at 49. Exactly 49 items are bought by 40% or more of couples. The next item drops to 35%.
  • Those 49 are 78% of all wedding spending. The remaining 65 line items account for the other 22% between them.
  • Six near-universal costs get forgotten. Alterations, tips, postage, dress and suit accessories and boutonnieres come to $1,108 in medians.
  • Do not add the median column. Medians do not sum. Use them as per-item benchmarks, and $18,231 as the whole-wedding number.

Most wedding checklists are written by people trying to sell you something, which is why they are exhaustive and unranked. Everything appears equally important. A guest book sits next to a venue.

This one is ranked by a single number: the percentage of American couples who actually bought it in 2025. Nothing else. No opinions, no should-haves.

The cutoff lands neatly. There are exactly 49 line items that at least 40% of couples buy, and the next item down the list drops to 35%. Those 49 account for 78% of all wedding spending in the country. The other 65 are where weddings get personal, and they are entirely optional.

Two things to know before you scan the list

Median, not average. Every price below is the median, which is the middle price actually paid. Averages in this industry are inflated by a small number of very expensive weddings. The average is included alongside so you can see the spread. Where the average sits far above the median, that category has a wide price range and you have room to move.

Do not add up the column. Medians do not sum. The median couple is not the median buyer in every category. Use these as per-item benchmarks. For a whole-wedding benchmark, the median American wedding in 2025 cost $18,231.

What to actually take from this

The top 20 are effectively non-negotiable. Everything bought by more than 80% of couples is functionally standard: food, venue, dress, cake, flowers, invitations, photographer, tips, alterations, postage. If you are building a budget from scratch, these are the lines that go on it first.

Six of the top 20 are the ones people forget. Alterations (94%), tips (91%), postage (90%), dress accessories (90%), suit accessories (85%) and boutonnieres (84%). None of these appear on a typical first-draft budget. Together their medians come to $1,108.

Items 30 to 49 are where the decisions live. Engagement ring, rehearsal dinner, lodging, save the dates, entertainment lighting, childcare, pet care. Roughly half of couples buy each one. These are the genuine choices, and the honest answer is that either decision is normal.

Everything below 40% is optional and should feel optional. Videographer, second shooter, welcome party, photo booth, live band, drone footage, planner. Some of these are wonderful. None are standard. Skipping all of them puts you in the majority.

The other 65

Everything below the 40% line, for reference. This is the long tail: 65 line items, 22% of total spending, and the part of the list where you build the wedding that is actually yours.

Frequently asked questions

How many things do you actually have to buy for a wedding?

There are 114 distinct wedding line items tracked in the 2025 United States market data, and the average couple buys about 49 of them. Only 49 items are bought by 40% or more of couples.

What is on a complete wedding budget checklist?

The 49 items bought by at least 40% of couples, starting with venue food service, alterations, the dress, the cake, the venue location fee, bouquets, invitations and the photographer.

Which wedding costs do people forget to budget for?

Alterations at 94% adoption, tips at 91%, postage at 90%, dress accessories at 90%, suit accessories at 85% and boutonnieres at 84%. Their medians total $1,108.

Can I add up the median prices to get my wedding budget?

No. Medians do not sum, because the median couple is not the median buyer in every category. Use the line-item medians as per-item benchmarks and $18,231 as the whole-wedding median.

What wedding items are genuinely optional?

Everything below 40% adoption, which is 65 of the 114 items. That includes videographers, second shooters, photo booths, live bands, welcome parties, drone footage and planners.
